The First Responder program is sponsored and endorsed by the Justice Institute of British Columbia and the JIBC Paramedic Academy.

Residents and visitors to the Chilcotin are on occassion faced with dealing with a medical or traumatic emergency while waiting for an ambulance to arrive; knowing what to do in that first few minutes of an emergency can make a difference between life and death.

The first responder training program provides participants with the basic life-saving skills and knowledge to effectively manage a medical or traumatic emergency until the arrival of the ambulance.

A first responder is just that; someone who is the first to respond to an emergency. Examples include Fire Departments, Police Departments, Search and Rescue organizations, Safety/Security personnel at sporting events, Staff in recreation facilities, and Staff in Special Care facilities to name a few.

Certification in the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation's Basic Life Support (BLS) for HealthCare Providers (CPR Level C) is a prerequisite for all First Responder certification and licensing.

Students complete a written and practical examination and upon successfull completion of the program receive First Responder Certification from the Justice Institute of BC and are eligible to apply for licensure within British Columbia through the Emergency Medical Assistant Licensing Branch.
